I won't go quietly

This drabble was written for Day 24 of the watsons_woes July Writing Prompts challenge.

Tales of the City. Let the history or geography of a place play a significant role in today’s work. Bonus point if the place is not Holmes and Watson’s home city.

“Remember, we’re going to Paris to track down a lead. Not to go sightseeing.”

Shirley stood next to Jane and leaned against the ferry's railing.

“Of course. Strictly business,” Jane said, matter-of-factly. A sly smile spread across her face as she stared out across the churning grey water.

“We’ve stalled long enough on Moran’s case. We need to show some progress or else she'll know we're suspicious of her.” Shirley folded her arms across her chest, trying to put on an air of impatience to cover up the fear gnawing away at her stomach.

The smile faded from Jane’s face. “Do you really think she's Moriarty?”

Shirley huffed. “I don't know. But that's why we're going to Paris. I think I’ve found the personal assistant of one of the victims from the past year. There's a good chance she could identify...JM.”

Jane looked at Shirley, her eyes sad and pleading.

“I know this sounds moronic to you. But all I'm asking for is dinner and the Eiffel Tower. Let me share that with you at least.”

Shirley shook her head. “Not moronic. Once the work is done, yes, I'd be happy to.”

Jane sighed. “Fine, then. Once this thing is put to bed. I'm holding you to that.”

“Darling,” Shirley laughed, “I meant after I interview the assistant. Can't catch the ferry back tonight, anyhow. So, dinner it is. And why do you want to see the Eiffel Tower? It's not like you've never seen it.”

“Because, darling, it's romantic.”

Jane leaned in and kissed her, and the world felt steady and right, even though the ferry swayed beneath their feet.
